Overview
Compass has mounted several projects in prisons, delivering Key Skills in
communication and devising in-house performances with the prisoners themselves.
Following a drama course for the Eastbourtne Probation Service in the
Spring of 2006, Compass is now planning a follow-up project with
people on probation and drug rehabilitation programmes, in partnership with
the Outreach Department of the Towner Art Gallery.
This will take place in October/November 2006 and the aim will be for participants
to produce their own video film with a dramatic content.
(Funding for this development is from the Lankelly/Chase Foundation) .
Former Prison Work:
'A Cut Above' was produced in East Sutton Park Open prison in the year 2000,
and 'Goldilocks Uncovered' was produced in Cookham Wood Closed prison in
2002.
Between February and April 2005, Compass worked for the first time in a
male prison, HMP Lewes. The drama was based on the theme of The Sea, to
mark the International Year of The Sea, and told the story of The Voyage
of The Batavia, one of the last of the great sailing ships to set out from
Bristol in 1837. The harsh conditions of seafaring at that time were well
depicted, and the various characters struggled with all the hazards of the
journey. After a tremendous storm and shipwreck, life begins again for the
survivors. The project was very relevant to the prisoners who worked on
it.
