About us

The Mission

Our mission is to ensure that the arts are both accessible and beneficial to all branches of the community. Working in response to participants, we encourage communication and creativity, ensuring opportunities to exchange, celebrate and promote understanding and inclusion through varied art activities.

The Method

Compass Community Arts believes that access to and participation in the arts by all is essential for artistic progress and that the arts are a powerful tool for personal and community growth and development. Our method involves highly skilled professional artists facilitating the creative development of marginalized artists who in turn facilitate participants through skill sharing and workshop events. Compass Community Arts enables hard to reach or disengaged people to play a full part in art activities and ultimately a full part in community life.

The Vision

Compass Community Arts views the arts as a universal language and strives to ensure that time and space for fully inclusive arts activities is provided locally. We believe that art, media and performing arts from the south east region should remain remarkable and influential and Compass will campaign for better provision to ensure this happens. Compass contributes to a vibrant and diverse community where ** art reaches everyone**.

Main Aims and Objectives

  • To ensure the provision of a variety of arts activities and opportunities for those least likely to have access to the arts, but for whom the arts could be of most benefit.

  • To broaden horizons through high quality arts facilitation and enlightening the local and wider community by breaking down barriers, challenging prejudices and promoting inclusion.

  • To continue initiating, developing and furthering our community links and partnerships for the benefit of all participants and the wider community. Finding more opportunities to engage with the public and improving access to a wide diversity of art and art forms, ensuring our participants have a valued place in the community.

  • To work in response to our participants not because of them, encouraging participants to create their own works express their own ideas and strive for artistic excellence.

  • To use the arts to address and help ease social problems, pioneering ‘skill sharing’ as an event and as a tool for personal and social growth and development, promoting the work of our artists and performers and Compass as an organisation, raising profiles and encouraging others to do the same.

  • To insist on, and assist in the development of an accessible and fully inclusive community arts centre within Eastbourne.
